Four fewer blades…

Shaving has become something I rather loathe to do lately. My so-expensive-they-must-
be-coated-with-diamond-dust-and-put-
through-a- ritualistic-ancient-blessing-ceremony Mach 3 Turbo blades are wearing out more quickly than they used to, and the quality of the shave seems to have declined. I dislike the experience in general, and will try to go every other day if I don’t have anywhere to be or anyone to impress.

Convenient, then, that I’d stumble upon this Ask MeFi thread, outlining the perils and advantages of switching to a single-blade “safety” razor, with badger-hair brush and the works. They point us to a well-written, incredibly informative article over at MSNBC on How to get the perfect shave, which has practically sold me on the concept.

I’m a little bit weary with the idea of nicks and cuts, but the razor burn and general unpleasantness is quickly pushing me towards making the $50-or-so investment and trying out the double-edged method. At the very least, the article highly recommends showering first (which I don’t) and using a quality brush to apply quality shaving cream, instead of the old fingers-and-can approach. I think I might make it a pleasant early Christmas gift for myself, really.

Either way, if you ever shave, the MSNBC article really says something and addressed a lot of my concerns and issues that I have with the almost-daily ritual. And, to be honest, this is the sort of thing that would be nice to pass on to a son, once I get there.
