Dawn Ying Hotlinks To Me

So I was perusing my server stats tonight and noticed my primary site, Originality Is Overrated has so far this month used 600 GIGABYTES in bandwidth.

As spectacular as that sounds, they were almost entirely a result of a swarm of hotlinks to my MP3s directory. For those not in the know, hotlinking is the practice of directly embedding or linking to someone else’s content so that it appears on your site, but is still hosted on the other site, and the other server. As such, you don’t have to worry about bandwidth costs or anything silly like that at all.

Fortunately, I own the web server I run off of, but this would be a costly problem otherwise.

I found that the highest ranked external referrer was a blog called Clap Bang Kiss by Dawn Yang. Apparently, she’s all the rage ever since breaking out on Hottest Blogger.

She also thought it’d be terrific to place an embed that links directly to my (previously) unprotected /downloads/ directory, to the song Run by Snow Patrol. And while it’s true that it’s one of my favorite songs, 83,000 downloads of it makes me a bit leary. And my server.

So, for now, I’ve password-protected the directory. I’m wondering how long it will take for her to find out what’s causing the giant user name and password prompt now appearing on all of her blog pages. Sorry, faithful Yang fans. But seriously, host your own content, kids.

On the flip side, if you’re interested in hosting with us, you can reach us over at Synapse Studios. There’s not too much there, because we keep low-key, but it’s quality product nonetheless. Fill out a contact form and we’ll get back to you.

Also, feel free to subscribe to us here. I’m still building the site out, so the RSS link is at the very bottom. But we’re a fun time. You know it.

  1. Proof Reader Says:

    Headline = Ying
    Text = Yang

    Is this ironic, or what?
