Two Guys and a Mountain
Chris and I just recently celebrated the first of hopefully many Gay Fridays. Actually that’s not true, Gay Friday was such a success that the following days seemed boring and dismal in comparison. It may be in our best interest never to have such a day ever again.
But I digress.
We started off by seeing Brokeback Mountain, which, if you’ve tried to see it yourself, is somewhat hard to find in a mostly conservative state (good luck Idaho). I was surprised by how good the film was. I’d heard it was nominated for seven Golden Globes, but really, it’s the “gay cowboy movie”, how good could it be?
My surprise was pleasant and sad. It was a depressing/hopeful film, and though there was a great kiss scene and one provocative moment, everyone short of “hating teh gays” will enjoy it. Note: it’s not a blockbuster. There are no wild animals that talk, worldwide natural disasters, car chases, explosions, or global conspiracies. But there are two guys and their families and their unavoidable love.
And a haunting soundtrack. I get sad just thinking about it.
We had a quickish dinner at Marie Calendars (of course we had pie, that’s a stupid question) and then finished off the evening with a viewing of Rent.
Rent is another depressing/hopeful film (taken from the stage) about eight friends and a year in their life through AIDS, housing troubles, and love. With six of the eight original cast members and a so-much-better-than-Andrew-Lloyd-Webber score, it’s definately worth seeing even if you don’t like broadway musicals.
Go see them now. GO.
